#2. Who? – Do You Need Maternity Pillow?
Pregnancy pillow – is a special huge pillow made with natural materials; it is used for healthy sleep and corrects the position of your body. Thanks to form and filler, they provide the right physiological position of the neck and body while sleeping and help to find the right pose. Such models will relieve osteochondrosis and infringement of nerves in cervical and lumbar areas; they also help to cope with insomnia and improve the quality of sleep. Japanese scientists recommend them for single people who experience shortages of embraces and physical intimacy. You can put it under yourself, wrap your arms and legs and settle on it or under it. They help to sleep well, and the correct position guarantees healthy sleep.
At this time, one of the most important things for a future mother is to restore her power level during sleep. The body receives a high load every minute and works in a strengthened mode. So, night sleep should be full and deep to restore the strength of your body. Poor sleep leads to irritability, fast fatigue, and exhaustion of the nervous system of a woman and her baby. Each woman’s pregnancy proceeds in different ways: someone has a small stomach, so they can sleep without special adaptations. Others have to build a real cocoon from a huge number of cushions and then shift them from one place to another. An enlarged belly prevents women from sleeping well, so it would be complicated in her state to choose a comfortable position.
Doctors forbid sleeping on the stomach as this has clear reasons because of a child. Lying on the back is also undesirable because the circulation of blood is disturbed. You can sleep on one side, but it’s uncomfortable too. For a healthy sleep, she needs a special convenient appliance, and special pillows can correct this situation. Though a regular one might give you the support and relief that you need, a maternity pillow is still the best choice because it is made specifically for pregnant women taking into consideration challenges that you face. If you are a tummy or back sleeper then definitely you will need extra support from cushions that were designed specifically for you. Moreover, a specifically-designed cushion will be a great help if you wake up experiencing some pain in your lower back, hips, or pelvis. If one of these statements is true for you, then such an accessory is definitely recommended.
#3. Why? – Advantages
Carrying a child is a difficult job. 80% of women have problems when sleeping. Psychological factors affect sleep negatively in the first weeks of pregnancy: excessive impressionability, anxious thoughts, and experiences about the upcoming life changes. An unstable state of mind can manifest itself even with nightmares. The physiological causes of bad sleep become dominant with fetal growth and increased stress in the body: digestion is upset, worries bloating, breathing becomes more difficult, could be a pain in the legs, back, lower abdomen, the pressure of the uterus on the bladder makes you wake up more often, or cramps may disturb you at night.
Difficult task to find a comfortable pose for sleeping in the last stages of pregnancy
- Sleep on the abdomen is highly undesirable for the safety of the future baby, so the best choice is a pregnancy pillow for stomach sleepers. It has a hole in the middle, and when you sleep on the stomach it goes into a hole and does not hurt your baby;
- Sleep on the back is also contraindicated – the internal organs experience excessive uterine pressure, and blood circulation is disturbed, which can lead to dizziness and swelling of the legs and hands. The excellent choice will be a pregnancy pillow for back sleepers;
- Baby’s movements may interfere with sleeping: if a pose is unsuccessful, oxygen may be lacking;
Benefits
- They are made from quality materials and do not cause allergies. You can use this even with a newborn baby and not be afraid for his health;
- Covers are easily removed and can be washed in a washing machine. You do not need to exert effort, just remove it (maybe lightning or Velcro);
- Special fillers are 100% highest-quality; it spills your body’s contrails, so you can sleep on them with better comfort. The cushion can be used for daytime rest, watching TV, or reading. Filler adjusts to the shape of your body, but it does not deform;
- If you have fatigue in your legs or back, such pillows will be your salvation. Put your feet on it and feel a noticeable relaxation. Put it behind your back, and you can remove tension from the spine. They can be used not only by pregnant women but also by children or older adults;
#4. What Kind? – Kinds & Types
Unlike regular cushions that are designed for headrests, maternity pillows support the whole body or parts of it to ease pain or discomfort. There are three main types, so let’s discuss what they are, how to use them, and their advantages and disadvantages. Pillows resemble letters, so they are divided into such types: «U», «C», «L», «I», «G», «bagel», and «boomerang». Their feature is the ability to adjust to the physiology of women during pregnancy. The length can be different, as well as size, but the width is usually standard – 35 cm.
- Taking Shape – it is needed to unload tensed muscles and give them relaxation during sleep. Sometimes such models have two parts and hooks to change their shape. You can sleep on one side or change shape and lie down under your belly, resting during the day
- Wedge – these are designed for those who love to sleep on the sides, so the pillow has this form. This is very creepy because the load goes away from the waist. This type is used not only for sleep but also during day rest. Put it under the lower part of the back, and you can get a full rest of the muscles of your spine
- Full-Body – supports the shape of the body in different areas. Most often, the length of it goes from 1,5 meters.
Advantages:
- 100% supports your whole body, and there is no need for an additional cushion
- Stays in place even when you toss and turn throughout the night
- Flexible structure conforms to the shape that you want, and this is highly comfortable for sleeping
Disadvantages:
- Quite big. Takes a lot of space in your bed
- Not suitable for back sleepers
Full Body Pillows – #1 Solution For Better Sleep
Full-Length Body Pillow – it is not difficult to figure out that this type is meant to support your whole body. These models are straight and extremely helpful in supporting your back: when you sleep you hug a pillow and place your arms and legs around it, and the center of it supports your tummy. Full-length models are usually available in two styles: flexible full-length – resembles a drafts stopper and can be easily bent, so it adds more comfort when you sleep in any position, straight full-length – much longer than a regular type but looks the same. Can have many types:
Type «U» – horseshoe-shaped and extremely comfortable. This type supports the stomach, spine, legs, head, and neck. It is very convenient that doesn’t need to be twisted: you can just swap the side and continue sleeping. Many mothers use this type to feed babies, making a cozy nest. This type ensures perfect rest for your back during the night. There is one small drawback – a large size, so «U-shaped» can only be used only on a large bed. Advantage: you can sleep hugging it if a woman loves hugging her man at night.
Type «C» (or Type «J») – is one of the best choices for small beds. You can take this type on the road and sleep in comfort. When using a C-shaped type, you usually hold the base of the pillow between your legs, and the top part supports your head, the curved part supports your back. A brilliant option for those who like to spin during sleep.
Type «L» – shortened model of «U-type», can have a small tail with a wrapped end. This one is very compact and can be used for small beds. If you like to spin during sleep, just take it to the other side.
Type «I» – simple straight and long model. You can lay it under your stomach, but it’s not very convenient. It is best to use for support the spine. Children love this type and put one foot on it during sleeping.
Type «G» – similar to «bagel-type», but has more distinct contours. Its shape takes into account all bends of the body during sleep, so it can be used during the day and at night. A lot of women love this type because they can hug it, clasp their legs, sit and put it behind the back or put it under the belly. This one has a small tail so that you can put your feet on it, but many future mothers consider this tail as a slight drawback.
Type «O» («Donut») – completely hugs your body and can be used for average bed size. Very convenient to put a head on it, also will be comfortable for the stomach and back. This type has rounded lines of the entire roller, so you can find many useful applications: for sleeping, daytime rest, or feeding the baby.
drawback.
Type «V» («Boomerang») – a comfortable and soft variant that you can use even when traveling. It correctly supports the body but only from one side. If you want to sleep on the other side, then you need to move it.
#5. Made of What? – Filling Materials
Not only pillows are of different shapes and styles, but they are also different inside. The filling will make a big difference when it comes to its quality. So, what are the most widespread fillings for maternity body pillows?
- Polyester Fiber Filling – is one of the most popular choices among maternity women. It doesn’t make noise when you sleep. The firmness of the product depends on the amount of fiber that is placed inside it. Unfortunately, this type of filling doesn’t breathe very well.
- Styrofoam Ball Filling – styrofoam balls are also popular, partially because they are quite a cheap filling material, and it will determine the cost. The big advantage of styrofoam filling is that it is very light and will adapt to your sleeping patterns. Unfortunately, styrofoam balls will produce noise when you turn, so if this will bother you, such filling is probably not the best option for you.
- Memory Foam Filling – this foam is perfect because it adopts the shape of your body as you press against it. It, basically, “remembers” it. When you leave the pillow, it gets back to its original shape. Some memory foams allow heat to build up, so in a thing, it is usually shredded to allow air circulation and prevent the heat.
- Filling with Micro Beads – Micro-beads are very small balls with a diameter of approximately 1/32 inches. These balls feel like sand inside the pillow, but unlike sand, they are really light, and you can carry it wherever you need them. Micro-beads are good news for light sleepers because they don’t make noise. Besides, beads are much more supportive than styrofoam balls.
- Organic and Natural Filing – the best option for those who love everything natural. Wool, Kapor, and Spelt are among the most widespread organic fillings for maternity products.
#6. Time To Buy – What to Consider When Shopping?
What should be considered when choosing this super pillow? These are important factors that will help you to make the right choice. Perhaps these things are obvious and simple, but it is important. Look at these several items that should be read before buying this comfortable and useful product:
- Do you have any allergies? Even if you have never had allergies during pregnancy your body changes and you might become sensitive to fibers or any other materials. You need to consider it when choosing for yourself. And if you were prone to allergies or had breathing complications even before pregnancy, then a hypoallergenic model must be your choice. Some hypoallergenic models will save you from encountering allergies or asthma symptoms and will ensure your peaceful sleeping. Advice: if you feel some strange new smell from your newly purchased device, simply air the product out for several days.
- What kind of sleeper are you? Are you a stomach sleeper, a back sleeper, or a side sleeper? All pregnant women face different challenges related to sleeping positions so the choice will depend on whether you need more support on your back or your front.
- Do you mind the noise? Some fillings are noisier than the others (for example, Styrofoam ball filling). It means the pillow will make some noise when you move in your sleep. If it bothers either you or your partner, then it is better to choose one with a “silent” filling, like memory foam or micro-beads. Also, check out the fabric that the pillowcase is made of. Sometimes it can also be a bit cranky and produce sounds when you turn.
- Do you like firm or soft sleep? During pregnancy, it is better to use firmer ones because they provide more support. So, if you are a soft pillow lover, you will probably have to sacrifice your favorite one for several months. You might feel uncomfortable in the beginning, but you will get used to it. Remember that the softness depends on how much filling is inside. So if you absolutely cannot sleep on a firm pillow choose one with less filling.
- What is the size of your bed? Before buying, think about the size. The general rule of thumb is that smaller models are more portable, so if you need to travel around during pregnancy, this is a good choice. Big variants are more comfortable for sleeping but not for carrying them around. Besides, if your bed is not big enough, your partner might have to sleep on the couch because your pillow will occupy his sleeping space.
- Are you carrying twins? Though twins are a rare occurrence if you are a lucky future mom of these bundles of joy, then you might want to consider a model that will fit your tummy. It will most likely be bigger than you would have for a single baby. Therefore, you will need better support during sleep.
#7. Still In Doubt? – More Options To Consider Before Buying
- Materials and filler – Most often, manufacturers use natural cotton or a small number of additives from different combinations of tissues. But cotton is a better choice than polyester. Cotton will allow your skin to “breathe” and will be natural without an allergic reaction. It is important not only to choose the correct cover product but also its filler. It can be of two kinds, and each of them has its pros and cons.
Hollofayber is the ideal filler, which is made with the latest technology: in the production process, glue is not used, and the fibers are soldered together by the action of high temperature. Hollofayber consists of hollow, spiraling vertical threads, which give the pillow a flexible structure. These are durable, and easily washable while retaining their properties and shape.
Styrofoam is a more versatile filler, but it has good characteristics and all necessary standards of quality and safety requirements. Polystyrene foam is used in the manufacture of pregnancy products: it consists of very small balls, usually up to 1 mm in diameter. Styrofoam doesn’t attract ticks, mold, and any microorganisms, but styrofoam models are more expensive. Polystyrene models are extremely convenient because they adapt to the shape of the body, don’t bend under the weight of the body, and don’t deform. But there is a small minus that some women have noticed – the annoying rustle of polystyrene beads, this particular noise can make you nervous and disturb your comfortable sleep. - Design and function – Some are used to support the head, waist, and neck, others – are for the correct position of the stomach of a pregnant woman. Everything depends on how you are sensitive to sleeping and what kind of support you need. You can choose a cushion for daytime rest, for sleeping with a small child, or for comfort during pregnancy sleeping. There are models in the form of a wedge, they are convenient for the long journey. You can use them for sleeping or for feeding the baby. It ensures the correct positioning of the baby’s body, so you can be calm about him. Different pillows are used for different sizes of beds. Men and women use some models even for everyday sleep.
- Comfort – The #1 function of pregnancy pillows: 100% comfort for the stomach, head, neck, back, legs, arms, and spine. They should be NOT VERY hard and NOT VERY soft; they shouldn’t lose their shape during your sleep so you can use them even if you have a very sensitive sleep and always spin and move on the bed. You can put your stomach on a pillow, and your baby will be safe. It will not harm the fetus, even if you like to sleep on your stomach.
- Universality – some models change basic form (there are several hooks or stickers on them). You can use it after the birth of the baby, to feed him, or to sleep with him. Such models can be turned into a large cushion, and you could put a child there: high walls will not allow the baby to roll off or fall.
- Size – usually they have standard sizes of an average woman’s height (it is from 160 to 170 cm). There are models of small size (about 1 meter) to use only for sleep or day rest. If the mother has high growth and wants more comfort, then choose models from 250 to 320 centimeters. Growth is the main factor here, but you also need to remember the size of your bed.
- Safety – pillows for pregnant women are always safe not only for the mom but also for the future child. The baby is in the womb, and he is very fragile and susceptible to external factors. The quality of filler and cover is the best in these products. Manufacturers use natural materials that do not cause irritation, itching, or other forms of allergy. You can take off the cover and wash it if necessary, it’s very simple. Fillers can consist of artificial materials, but they have the necessary standards and quality certificates.
#8. How? – Sleeping Positions
Every woman has her favorite sleeping posture, so she can fall asleep quickly and hard. What to do during the pregnancy period, when your favorite posture was sleeping on your stomach? It’s not just uncomfortable, after the first trimester it becomes dangerous for your child. It’s time to talk about sleeping positions during the pregnancy period.
Some women sleep in any pose for up to 12 weeks (first trimester). But there is advice from specialists: to start changing the position to a more suitable one and to do it gradually. A pillow will help you out, even if you want to give up your habit of sleeping on your stomach. We all know that the stomach is becoming quite large at 6-7 weeks and we are starting to look for a good sleeping posture again. It’s not only our habits that play a role here but also the hormonal background when changes in women begin in the whole organism. Everything usual for us becomes uncomfortable and annoying, and habits and tastes change too. Body pregnancy pillows have different forms, so you can choose any pose: there are models for those who sleep on their sides or their stomachs, and for those who like to hug or throw a leg.
The most common poses:
- On the side: the pillow lies between the knees, the edge of it is under the head or near the chest. This position allows you to support the stomach with the fetus, relax your back and legs
- On the back: put your feet on the pillow, but before that fold it twice. This position will allow you to relieve tension and fatigue from your feet, and also ensure the outflow of excess fluid.
- On the back in a semi-sitting position: put the pillow under your waist and put your hands on its edges, this posture will help to relieve tension from the spine
The safest position for a pregnant woman is lying on one side. Doctors advise sleeping on the left side because it improves blood circulation and it is useful for the mother and fetus. The baby in the womb receives the necessary oxygen, and the mother gets healthy and strong sleep. In this position, there is no pressure on the liver from this side of the body, the back will not hurt, and this position is very good for the work of the heart and all the organs.
Useful Functions:
- You can change its shape, making it straight, rounded, or completely round. Different types have their advantages and can change basic shapes with help of Velcro or hooks on fabric. During sleep it will be comfortable to hug it with your feet and put it under your belly, in the afternoon rest you can put a roller under your back.
- They will be useful for a child of different ages. You can put it on the couch and make a circle out to put the child there. This will allow him to be in comfort and safety because high edges will not let him fall. If the cushion is large, then the child can crawl there, play or learn to walk, clutching the sides of it with hands.
- Talk with your gynecologist, and tell him that you want to buy such a device. His advice will help you to make the right choice considering the characteristics of your body and how your pregnancy is going. Maybe you need a special pose, and this requires a particular model.
- You could use this super-product after the birth of the child. Some moms buy special chairs or make a semi-seat from the things so that it would be convenient to feed a small child. Maternity pillows will cope with this function.
- If you want to use it in the future and feed the baby, then check that cover of this model could be accurately removed and it can be easy to wash it. You can put one piece behind your back and put the other part on your knees, so you get comfortable support to put the baby and feed it with the breast.
Pregnancy pillows make the everyday life of young mothers simple and comfortable. Each woman chooses her own model, so we cannot recommend only one. Check our TOP-10 rating and choose the #1 model depending on your needs, habits, and preferences.
At first I bought in the form of a boomerang. And everything would be great, but to turn from side to side with such a huge pillow is uncomfortable at night. After I bought the U-shaped, I was very, very pleased, I sleep like in a cradle, the loin has stopped hurting. It is only necessary to take into account the size of the bed, such a pillow takes up a lot of space.
I want to share my impressions of my wonderful purchase. I wondered if I needed it for a long time, and what kind of pillow should I buy, and ultimately chose the U-shaped from PharMeDoc. This company produces hypoallergenic products, which was very important to me. I am delighted 100%: it is universal, soft and comfortable. Incredibly comfortable, thanks to her, I was finally able to sleep well and got rid of back pain. A huge plus is a zipper available in this model, with which you can adjust the stiffness.
I suffer for a long time until I take the desired comfortable position – just awful! It seems to me that my back never rests, my legs get tired, and I keep silent about my stomach. I did not even know that there are such products. I liked the information about the use after birth. Be sure to order yourself a U-shaped one with polystyrene foam – I really liked it and the size of the bed allows it – my bed is huge. So interesting and informative article. So much new learned. We, pregnant, need to take care of our health and the health of the future baby. Be sure to share information with friends.
During pregnancy after 25 weeks I was very tired during walking, after work I did not feel my legs from fatigue. Because of this, at night I could not find a comfortable sleeping position, I did not know where to put my legs. After these torments, we acquired a U-shaped pillow, it turned out to be very comfortable, you can put your foot on one side, and your back is touching on the other side. With this pillow, I forgot about insomnia, tired legs. Finally started to get enough sleep at night!
I spent a lot of time and effort searching for the perfect maternity pillow. Now there is a huge selection of them on the market. My choice fell on the pillow from Leachco. Sleeping on this pillow is very comfortable, it does not take up much space and you do not need to shift it from side to side, as it is convenient to sleep on both sides.
More recently, it seemed to me that pregnancy pillows were mischief, but I was mistaken! The fifth month of pregnancy made me change my mind.
When there were catastrophically fewer permitted postures for sleep, and comfortable ones even less, my back began to suffer frankly. The hunk became permanent and unbearable. In addition, my sleeping body did not want to obey the prohibitions and stubbornly turned me on my stomach, which was also quite annoying.
Of course, I tried to save myself by putting pillows and rollers from the blanket, but overnight all the constructions collapsed and there was no solution. After a brief search, I chose a banana-shaped pillow.
The results and my impressions: I am very pleased with the use, the pillow has become my salvation and now I get enough sleep, and I’m not afraid to roll over on my stomach in a dream. Another huge plus is that I had lower back pain due to the correct anatomical shape and posture of sleep. Very soft and nice to sleep and relax, hugs me from all sides. Have a nice day, everyone!
During the second pregnancy, my back hurt wildly (the first one didn’t), I couldn’t fall asleep at night, even while I was sleeping. My husband brought me a Boppy maternity pillow as a present. Yes, the pillow is rather big, but it turned out to be so comfortable, at least several times wrap it between my legs, even then in the last terms I managed to put my huge belly on the pillow. Sleep, of course, I got better.
From the pros:
• case is made of soft colored cotton
• filler allows the pillow to take on a body shape
• pillow helps to take a comfortable position in a dream, relieves excess load on the spine, supports the tummy
To begin with, I’m not at all pregnant 🙂 And so far I have not been pregnant, so I can’t say in what poses it is preferable to fall asleep to pregnant women 🙂 But I really like to sleep on my side, wrapping a blanket between my legs))) And I can and lay down a leg on a person sleeping nearby))) And it’s so convenient! Until recently, my usual pillows seemed uncomfortable to me, my neck hurt. The work is sedentary, my back often hurts, sometimes I want to lean on some roller and bend my back. Which I do using yoga cubes, for example. In general, somehow I came across a model Cozy Bump decided to purchase.
The pillow in my house has taken root, I call it “python” 🙂
Advantages:
• sleep comfortably
• many options for using
• if you place the pillow in a comfortable way, you can get rid of pain in the neck / back that appears after night
• excellent quality
Disadvantages:
• The pillow is huge, it always needs to be placed somewhere (think about it before buying or choose another model).
